Before she started the truck, Alexa reached across the console to take Kara’s hand. “Thank you for always being so supportive,” she said once the woman turned to look at her. “I missed you. It’s been hard.”

Kara face softened as she leaned closer. “I’ve missed you too,” she replied, raising her hand to run across Alexa’s cheek. “It was a rough time for me too.” She gently touched the edge of her eyepatch. The caress of her fingers on Alexa’s cheek made her entire body warm. “How is your eye? Does it hurt?”

“It did at first, but not really much anymore,” Alexa answered. “I heal quickly, and I actually keep forgetting I have it on.” She sighed. “Although, the doctor is concerned I will always have a slight blind spot in that direction.”

Nodding, Kara leaned back but kept holding Alexa’s hand. “Okay,” she said. “Does that mean no more fighting then?”

Alexa frowned. “Fighting again was never on my agenda,” she said, realizing after she did the answer sounded harsh, but she was not expecting the question. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to come across like that.”

Waving her hand as if to dismiss what she had asked, Kara seemed unphased by her tone. “I understand. I shouldn’t have sprung it on you. But you haven’t even thought about a rematch with Rachel Rhodes and setting things right?” she asked. “You would have beaten her. I know it.” Alexa didn’t answer right away. With all that was going on in her life with Anthony, her eye surgery, missing Kara, and all the accusations, she never considered fighting again. All along, in her mind, that chapter closed when she fought Rachel, win or lose. She would retire and walk away from the sport completely. But I lost because of circumstances out of my control, she thought. Kara is right. I was going to win once I wore Rachel Rhodes down.

There was one big problem with the idea regardless. “Even if I did consider it,” she said. “I’m not a hundred percent sure the gaming commission would let me after these accusations.” On that sad note, she started the truck. It was past time to go back to the hospital. Riding in silence for a mile, Alexa could almost hear the wheels turning in Kara’s head. “What are you thinking about?”

“I’m thinking we need to find a way to clear both our names,” she said. “It’s such bullshit.” She blew out a frustrated breath. “But I understand your situation. The media wouldn’t let it go if you simply say your brother collapsed. They would dig until all of it came out.”

Nodding, Alexa rolled to a stop at the light. “And even if I wanted to explain everything, which I don’t, I can’t until Anthony wakes up. I won’t do anything without discussing it with him first.”

Glancing over, Alexa watched Kara chew her fingernail. “Right,” the woman said after a beat. “So, we wait until he is awake and see what he wants to do.” As
